The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) protects the personal information of the public and employees of private sector organizations operating in Alberta. It governs the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by organizations in a manner that recognizes and balances the right of an individual to have his or her personal information protected, and the need of an organization to collect, use or disclose personal information for purposes that are reasonable. Airdrie Christian Academy (ACA) respects the right to privacy and uses or discloses personal information in accordance with the provisions of this Act.
Personal Information is collected mainly for educational purposes by ACA and its employees. The following are examples of how personal information may be used by the school:
• Student Records, report cards, attendance
• Achievement tests and Diploma exams
• To determine eligibility or suitability for an award, scholarship, athletic program, etc.
• Portfolio assessments, behavioral and special needs assessments
• Yearbooks, Memory Books, class blogs and identification card photos
• Photos including individual, class, team, club or videos for use within ACA
• School newsletters
• Family Phone list (Only names, address and phone number are listed along with your children’s grade for purposes of communication and fellowship)
• School sponsored activities such as fine arts productions, presentations, fairs, celebrations, club, sports activities
• Assignment of accounts (e.g. Gmail, Success maker etc.) which may require a student’s information to log in. (Secure ACA online environments)
• Transportation services, school activities such as field trips
• Parent / guardian contact for absenteeism, emergencies, etc.
• Classroom or program assignments and showcases
• Displays at school
• Law enforcement matters relating to safety and security including video surveillance cameras at the school.
The School will contact parents / guardians when any additional consent is required in specific circumstances not covered explicitly or implicitly by this general consent.
PLEASE NOTE: Photos, videos or images of students attending or participating in school activities (e.g. chapels, concerts, art showcases, field trips, sporting events, clubs, graduations or other ceremonies), which are open to the public, may be taken by ACA Staff, the public-at-large, including journalists, reporters, videographers and other members of the media and used for purposes within and outside the school. ACA cannot control or prevent the further distribution or use of these photos, videos, images or other personal information on social media by those who access the information.
Other Service Providers
Personal Information collected by the school may also be shared with other service providers, including but not limited to, Alberta Health Services for the purpose of counselling, vaccination records and emergency services if needed.
Copyright Release
As part of a student’s educational program, he / she may be recorded; have their work displayed; have his/her work reproduced for non-profit, educational purposes. Their production(s) / work(s) may be shown at educational displays during an open house, chapel and other school-related activities at the school.
